Description:
We are the brooms that sweep the stage for the pantomime players,' complained the actors in the Amsterdam theatre around 1800. After a play, the audience came in large numbers to the theatre on the Leidseplein to be amused by a cheerful, comical after-piece, usually a ballet pantomime. The most beloved pantomime player at that time was Jan van Well, whose comic talent, according to the critics of the time, 'made the liver shake'. His Pierrot creation in particular was inimitable.
