Description:
Just as Albert Heijn expanded his grocery store into a global empire, father Rot is going to expand his cigar store into a chain of cigar specialty stores throughout the Zaanstreek and far beyond. His son has to go out and sell a suitcase full of tobacco products in the far surroundings. In this way, the boy gets to know the mysterious world of adults and the exciting temptations of eroticism.
Jelte Rep tells with great warmth and humour about the scarce years of the war and afterwards. The stories are largely set in the Zaanstreek, where he grew up. During the famine winter, a toddler has to fight for the life of his rabbit during the day and listen to the terrifying drone of bombers flying over at night. After the war, he is put on a boat to faraway Friesland to recuperate in that strange place. In the fifties, he imagines himself a poet, but his dreams are disturbed by earthly matters such as earning money, schoolwork and budding sexuality.
