Description:
Rotterdam's Kirsten Verdel was a staff member of Barack Obama during the American presidential elections. In a fascinating and personal story, the 30-year-old Verdel describes how she and her colleagues are trying to get a Democrat back into the White House after eight years of Bush. Verdel was the first foreigner ever at the national headquarters in Washington DC in a presidential campaign. The unique look behind the scenes in the war room of the Democrats begins in 2005, when Verdel is asked by PvdA Member of Parliament Peter van Heemst to lead his campaign for the Rotterdam municipal elections in 2006. Verdel subsequently works in the national and provincial PvdA election campaigns, manages to get former minister Klaas de Vries into an electable position for the Senate with a lightning action, and finally, after wandering through China and Sierra Leone, leaves for Canada with the prestigious Sauvé Scholarship. In the second part of the book, Verdel describes how she ends up in Obama's national campaign team from Canada, where she works on 'rapid response', 'opposition research' and Obama's debate preparation, among other things. In an almost daily report, she describes how the battle for the elections becomes increasingly negative. She explains how the Democrats fend off all attacks.
