Description:
“The sea, the sea” was the cry of joy of the Greeks when, after their endless journey through the interior of the Persian Empire, they finally reached the coast of the Black Sea.
The sea can mean: 'Home at last!' But the sea can also stand for danger, mystery, challenge, adventure, exile, farewell, love, longing, infinity. Poets from all ages and all cultures have sung about the sea in their verses and conquered it, feared it and passionately loved it.
The Sea, the Sea is a breathtaking voyage of discovery along the coasts of world poetry, a journey that takes in more than one hundred and fifty poets from all continents: from Homer to Walcott, from Sappho to Gerhardt, from Eybers, Pushkin and Neruda to lesser-known poets and poetesses from China, Korea, Japan, African countries and the Middle East.
A selection of poets and translators contributed to this book, and most of the translations were created especially for The Sea, the Sea. The sea poems collected here are like the shells and stones that wash up on the beaches of the oceans: whoever picks them up and reads them, experiences the old splendor of the sea again. Together they can, as the Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet says, like 'sailors of many different ships sing the great song of the many different seas'. The Sea, the Sea is published on the occasion of the International Year for the Oceans.
