Description:
The monograph Van Herk & De Kleijn, Tools and Architecture offers a comprehensive overview of the varied and unconventional oeuvre of Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn from 1966 to 2004. In addition to architecture, urban planning, interiors and furniture, attention is also paid to objects, utensils and films.

This book discusses both the inventive skylights of their houseboat and the houses on the Borneokade in Amsterdam, and their foam rubber objects and ultra-light platform shoes, half a metre high, receive just as much attention as the Woutertje Pieterse School in Leiden and the lodging building for officers of the Royal Navy in Den Helder.
The working methods of the architects and their projects are explained by Hans Ibelings. Adriaan Geuze and Cilia Erens give a personal vision of the work of Van Herk & De Kleijn.

Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn recently received a lot of attention for their special design of the lodging building for officers of the Royal Navy in Den Helder. In the autumn of 2004 they also participated in the exhibition 'Woonerven en Zitkuilen' about architecture and urban development of the seventies in the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam.
