Description:
With the Wars of the Roses fresh in memory, England is on the brink of anarchy around 1520. If the king were to die without a male heir, it would mean civil war again. Henry VIII therefore wants to have his marriage to Catherine of Aragon annulled and marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope and most of Europe are against it. Ultimately, this issue even means the downfall of Henry's advisor, Cardinal Wolsey. A power vacuum and a deadlock arise.
Son of a brutal blacksmith, political genius, briber, pusher and charmer: it is Thomas Cromwell who steps into this impasse. In his unstoppable rise to power he has already broken many rules of a rigid class society, and if need be he will break a few more. Cromwell rises from the ruins of personal disaster - the loss of his young family and of Wolsey, his beloved master - and deftly finds his way into and through the royal court, where man is wolf to man. Against all odds, he is prepared to reshape England to his and Henry's wishes.
Wolf Hall is a superior novel in which Cromwell and his contemporaries are portrayed in a way that completely transcends the limitations of the historical narrative. Never before has this period of English, or rather European, history been told in such a compelling and layered way. A very deserved winner of the Man Booker Prize!
'This is a beautiful and deeply human book, a dark mirror she holds up to our own world. Hilary Mantel is one of our bravest and yet most brilliant writers.' - The Observer
'Brilliant. (...) It has been rightly praised for reinventing the possibilities for the historical novel.' - Evening Standard
“A supreme epic work.” - Kate Mosse
