Description:
Alexander Pierce, a sixty-year-old English archaeologist, has two passions: his work at the excavations in the Bay of Naples and the love poetry of the Roman poet Catullus. With the arrival of a beautiful Frenchwoman, a third passion ignites in Pierce. After thirty years of seemingly happy marriage, he falls head over heels in love with Claudia.
Meanwhile, the excavations are progressing and his suspicions are growing that this is the villa of Clodia, the courtesan who in the first century BC drove many men crazy and to whom Catullus wrote his fiery poems. But just as Clodia broke Catullus' heart, so Claudia proves fatal to Alexander.
Just like in her acclaimed debut Terentia, Adelheid van Beuningen shows her fascination for antiquity in De villa van Clodia. Moreover, this atmospheric second novel offers another love drama - this time under the burning sun of today's Italy.
Adelheid van Beuningen (1932) made her debut in 1999 with the historical novel Terentia, which was received enthusiastically. Adelheid van Beuningen spent a large part of her life abroad. Today she lives and writes in the Netherlands.
'Terentia is special because it is a debut that contains no promises, but immediately fulfills them. Powerful and self-assured.'
