Description:
Newlyweds Richard and Silvia Tebrick are taking a walk around their estate. He wants to see the hunt. His wife is not so much into hunting, but follows her beloved husband. When the hunting dogs have passed and Richard looks back at his wife, he no longer sees her: where Silvia stood, there now stands a small, bright red fox, looking at him in alarm.

What can Richard do but carry his wife home, hidden in his cloak so that no one sees her horrific transformation? He sends the servants away, and shoots his dogs at the bottom of the garden. For this fox is his wife, and he will protect her from any danger. He dresses her in her favorite dresses, feeds her tea and biscuits, and devises a technique so that they can continue to play their card games. He loves her, no matter what she looks like.

And yet he begins to doubt. How much of his wife is left, now that she is running after the ducks a little too eagerly, now that her table manners are visibly deteriorating and she no longer sleeps next to him, but at the foot of the bed or even under it? How can he still express his love, now that she even digs tunnels in the garden to escape from him? What does his sworn oath of marital fidelity still mean, when she
proudly shows him her litter of fox cubs?

David Garnett astonished the world in 1922 with this fabulous debut, in which humor and tragedy are masterfully combined. Like the miraculous metamorphosis of Silvia Tebrick, Garnett became an overnight sensation after the publication of Woman or Fox, and he would henceforth find himself at the center of London literary life.
