169 DIY Houses. From Experiment to Instrument
Annemarie Sour (text)

The 169 DIY Homes project, an initiative of the municipality of Rotterdam, seems to be developing into a real social housing instrument that can be used in several places in the Netherlands. The 169 DIY Homes have visibly led to a positive result in Rotterdam in the so-called Hot Spots, the most dilapidated neighbourhoods. A project like this can give the current pre- and post-war housing stock in the Netherlands a new purpose. The 169 DIY Homes are being completely renovated both inside and out and the neighbourhoods are improving socially due to the influx of enthusiastic buyers/DIYers, often young creative city dwellers. This publication offers professionals as well as administrators, housing corporations, architects and civil servants, but also future DIYers and DIY home residents, a wealth of information about
the financing, the results, the distribution process of the DIY houses, the emotions, the frustrations and the perseverance of the DIYers, the pitfalls and the surprising side effects.
