Description:
Why did Austrian and German artists paint scenes from our Eighty Years' War, and Rembrandt, Vermeer or Frans Hals never? Why did Schiller and Goethe write books and plays about the Revolt against Spain, and Dutch authors hardly at all?
In the late eighties, Jan Blokker and his family made a trip to a number of locations that played a role in Dutch history: Den Briel, Nieuwpoort, the Mookerhei and Heiligerlee, places that were strategic junctions in the battle for freedom four centuries ago. A beautiful trip that the family often referred to later as the 'Trip of the Eighty Years' War'.
Blokker has now reported on that trip in his unique way and photographer Eddy Posthuma de Boer took beautiful photos.
Where has the Eighty Years' War gone? contains an extensive travelogue, including maps, photos and memorable dates, and maps out what remains of these heydays in our national history.
