Description:
This book is dedicated to 50 intriguing archaeological monuments from all over the world: from the dark Stonehenge to the mysterious Petra, from the Masada plateau to the terracotta army of Xi'an, and from the world of the biblical patriarchs to the cradle of Western democracy in Athens.
All this is illustrated with a magnificent collection of colour photographs, maps and plans. In illuminating text contributions, leading scientists describe the historical significance of the archaeological monuments. They discuss, among other things, the original state of the sites, the life of the former inhabitants and their rituals and traditions.
Whether the site in question is world-famous or barely known, whether it has been recently uncovered or has been withstanding the elements for centuries, it brings us into direct contact with Antiquity. This book sheds new light on many a mystery and is a must for anyone interested in archaeology and Antiquity.
