Description:
Els de Groen is a writer, publicist and visual artist. From 2004 to 2009 she was a member of the European Parliament, for the Greens/European Free Alliance group. She has been the author of around 50 books since 1975. Her first stories were mainly for beginning readers, later she would write for an older audience and publish both fiction and non-fiction about contemporary history and social issues. The most recent is her autobiographical essay Voor het volk (2016). She has also published novels for adults, including De bruidskogel, her literary debut in 1999. In addition, she writes poems, which she has hardly made public until now. However, in 2016 she did win first prize in the 'City Poetry Competition' in the Netherlands and Flanders. With the collection Wakker vallen she officially debuts as a poet. The British and the French fall in love, tombent amoureux. The Germans fall over with fatigue, fallen um vor Müdigkeit. The Dutch fall asleep. Nobody wakes up. Why not? Why do we make friends when we mean open? And why is bird-free anything but bird-safe? Language is a fascinating subject: it reveals positions and traditions that seem self-evident but are anything but. Whoever tilts the words even slightly changes the perspective and with it his view of the world. Yet Wakker vallen is not just a game with form. The author also wants to tamper with the content by approaching it differently than is customary. In this way, the refugee acquires his double selves, the common man changes into an immature child, power acquires the size of a postage stamp, walls become polygamous brides and old women girls. Wakker vallen is not a startle, but a collection of poems to look at things anew. That stirs our imagination: a necessary and beneficial process. Els de Groen made oil paintings for more than 30 poems, which are printed in colour in this edition.
