Description:
This book about love and lust between women in the second half of the eighteenth century in the Netherlands makes a fundamental contribution to the debate about the historiography of female homosexuality in the Netherlands. The cultural-historical and socio-historical analyses of sources and images of women who felt attracted to women also make Ziel en zinnen an exemplary study for the history of sex and sexuality. In this book, Myriam Everard describes the soul friendship and virtuous lust of women like Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken, she dissects and revises the stories about women in men's clothing and exposes the traces of a subculture of whores and clowns. She establishes that contemporary concepts are inadequate to explain the late eighteenth-century female reality. Thanks to a reserved yet incisive style, Everard succeeds in giving a nuanced picture of pious and godless women, of sensual and moral love at the end of the eighteenth century. Myriam Everard's research calls for a rereading and recalibration of established stories and interpretations, and thus places itself in the best traditions of women's history.
