In this book, Myriam Everard describes the soul friendship and virtuous lust of women like Betje Wolff and Aagje Deken, she dissects and revises the stories about women in men's clothing and exposes the traces of a subculture of whores and clowns. She establishes that contemporary concepts are inadequate to explain the late eighteenth-century female reality.
