Description:
A computer pirate manages to penetrate the Vatican's computer system and, despite all security measures, even break into the Pope's private computer. There he leaves a mysterious message about a church in Seville that 'kills people in self-defense'. Father Quart, a secret agent of the Vatican, travels to Seville to investigate the case. There he is confronted with a corrupt archbishop, a fraudulent banker, three picturesque delinquents, a scandal journalist, an archaic priest who defends his church tooth and nail against the impending demolition, and a pious elderly aristocrat with a dangerously attractive daughter. The ghost of a young duchess who died in the previous century and that of her lover also circulate in this breathtaking story.
The Drum Skin is a high-level literary thriller, in the tradition of Umberto Eco, Iain Pears and Arthur Conan Doyle. Arturo Pérez-Reverte pays homage to the city of Seville in an intriguing way and once again succeeds in mixing the tension and light-hearted reading of a thriller with the thoughtful seriousness of a literary work.
Arturo Pérez-Reverte (Cartagena, 1951) became world famous with The Panel of Flanders and widely praised for The Club Dumas. With Comancheland he said goodbye for good as a war correspondent for Spanish television.
'A cheerful, sometimes very happy, intriguing quest.' - **** in VN's Detective & Thriller Guide.
'It reads like a Belgian bonbon tastes: delicious, expertly made and with a melting aftertaste.' - NRC Handelsblad.
