Description:
Since the 1950s, Rabbi Kirshner and his followers have spent every summer in the mountain village of Kaaterskill, north of New York. One of the summer guests is Elizabeth Shulman: a devoted mother of five daughters, who, through her curiosity and intelligence, feels a strong need to develop herself within the strict rules of the Orthodox Jewish faith. She comes up with the idea of opening a grocery store with kosher products. Rabbi Kirshner actually gives her permission, which finally allows her to taste the worldly life she so desperately desires. When the old rabbi dies, he is succeeded by his son Isaiah. He turns out to be even stricter in his teachings than his father, and when Elizabeth makes a mistake, he revokes her license without mercy.
