Description:

The book Search for the painting collection and the archaeological finds of Geert Kuiper 1840 – 1927 , written by his great-grandchildren, is about a unique personality in the second half of the nineteenth century who had contact with many artists of the Hague School, in particular Alphonse Stengelin. His interest in art led to his own museum with 80 to 100 paintings in the small farming community of Hooghalen, 'the first museum' in the former municipality of Beilen!
In addition, as an amateur archaeologist, he was a valued employee of the Provincial Museum of Antiquities (Drents Museum). He donated approximately 65 antiquities to this museum. The book tells the story of a man with a great interest in art, which led to his own museum.

Geert Kuiper was a simple farmer/innkeeper from Hooghalen, art collector and amateur archaeologist, who stood out from the Drenthe crowd in the second half of the 19th century. An 'exceptional' man in the eyes of his fellow villagers.
The story about Geert Kuiper provides a good insight into how a Drenthe farmer/innkeeper in the second half of the nineteenth century was interested in art and was also a valued amateur archaeologist.

The book Search for the painting collection and the archaeological finds of Geert Kuiper 1840 - 1927 has 192 pages and is published in the format 170 x 240 mm. The interior is printed in full colour. The book contains over 200 illustrations, including images of the paintings that hung in Geert Kuiper's 'painting museum' and of his archaeological finds in the area around Hooghalen. Several of the paintings depicted were made in Hooghalen or in the area around the village.
