Description:
Summer, Naples. The heat hangs like a suffocating blanket over the deserted city. In the lobby of an apartment building in a wealthy neighborhood lies a young woman, curled up like a sleeping cat. Her name is Sarah lo Russo and she is not asleep. She is dead. The neighbors have heard her cries, but they have not gone to look.
The suspicion falls on her fiancé, Sandro Cangiullo, with whom she had a fight. Or on Genny Esposito, her ex-fiance, who has loose hands and a criminal record. And on top of that, has gone on the run.
Acanfora, the young policeman who found the body, is completely distraught. That evening, he leaves the food that his mother had so carefully prepared. The prosecutor is on the phone and urges a quick arrest. The tea-drinking Commissioner Santagata is not deterred and continues his way steadily, if sometimes roughly.
Fragment:
“Yes, there's a body there, absolutely.”
“Okay, received, we'll pass it on to Commissioner Santagata right away,” Cerasella said.
I grabbed a cigarette and put it in my mouth. I found my lighter and lit the cigarette.
Cipriani came closer.
'The protocol states that in the event of a death, the emergency services and the technical investigation department must be informed.'
'So do that Cipriani, do that and immediately call another police car.'
While he was on the phone, the girl's purple painted nails came back to me. I could see her smiling on the bed, with the brush ready to paint her nails.
