Description:
The most important and oldest predecessor of ABN AMRO was the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (NHM), which played a crucial role in the Dutch economy. This book is the first complete overview of the history of the NHM after 88 years.
The Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij was founded in 1824, on the initiative of King William I. In many respects it was the successor to the illustrious VOC. For a long time the trading company was mainly active in the Dutch East Indies. From 1880 onwards the NHM also started to operate as a bank, which increased the importance of the company in the Netherlands. In the meantime, the banking and cultural business in the Dutch East Indies remained important components. In 1926 the NHM moved into its new head office on the Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam, now the De Bazel building of the Amsterdam City Archives. In 1964 the NHM merged with the Twentsche Bank to form Algemene Bank Nederland.
Much has been written about the NHM, but a complete history was lacking until now. This book changes that.
