Description:
This handbook discusses the origins and characteristics of the modern Western society type. Bert Altena and Dick van Lente, historians working at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, describe the radical economic, cultural and political changes from the middle of the eighteenth century until the fall of the communist regimes in 1989. Freedom and reason are seen as important characteristics of Western societies. During the Enlightenment, these societies broke away from ecclesiastical and secular authority, during the French Revolution from the old state and society structure and during the industrial revolution from restrictive institutions and natural limitations. Reason and freedom do not only have a positive charge. Rationality appears to be able to lead to madness, freedom to oppression.
The first edition dates from 2003, the second from 2006, the third from 2011.
