Description:
The believers of Hilversum had to cross the heath to church in Laren on Sundays. But in 1416, Bishop Frederik van Blankenheim elevated their chapel on the Kerkbrink to a parish church. This anniversary book describes six centuries of Hilversum church history. For a long time, the religious palette of the village remained manageable. There were Roman Catholics, Reformed, Old Catholics, Jews and a handful of Lutherans. But after the arrival of the railway in 1874, the village filled up with commuters and workers who introduced new denominations. Around 1970, Hilversum had fifty churches. After that, church attendance declined and the painful process of merging parishes and municipalities and selling off church buildings began. Nevertheless, the city still has around thirty-five religious communities, each with their own character. Faith is a personal matter. In one place you hear psalms in the old rhyme, in another Opwekkingliederen and around the corner Gregorian chant or Oosterhuis.
