Description:
In the urban region of Haaglanden, hundreds of organisations have provided assistance to children and young people in the past centuries. This was initially done by the local government with orphanages and later orphanages, and then private individuals and churches also set up homes for orphans. In the twentieth century, more differentiation emerged, and separate institutions were established for separate target groups, all still organised in pillarised frameworks. The first growth of the sector, which started around 1900, accelerated in the sixties and seventies of the last century. In that period, dozens of institutions in the city of The Hague alone were active in what we now call youth care. There was little enthusiasm for cooperation and coordination between these homes. Although there was frequent local consultation, the organisations hardly came any closer together in the twentieth century. It was mainly the political processes of the past decades that forced the organisations to (far-reaching) cooperation, after which the first mergers arose. Ultimately, after many intermediate steps, the organisations that provided care to young people in the urban region of Haaglanden merged into one organisation in 2003: Jeugdformaat.
On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of Jeugdformaat, we are reflecting on that past. Given the extensive history of so many predecessors of Jeugdformaat, it is not possible to map it out in its entirety. For that reason, we present our roots in a nutshell with this anniversary edition: the organization and working methods of a number of predecessors are described throughout the centuries.
If we do not know history, we are doomed to repeat it. That is why the past is not only important for the future of Jeugdformaat, but for the broad youth care as a whole.
