Description:
On November 9, it will be thirty years ago that beer magnate Freddy Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer were kidnapped. After the kidnapping that lasted until November 30, 1983, Cor van Hout (1957-2003) became a national celebrity overnight as one of the kidnappers. Little was known about 'the man Cor van Hout'. Not so strange: no one from his family cooperated. Until this book. With many unknown facts and unique photos.
Cor is said to have been the mastermind behind the brutal kidnapping. But his family and friends know him from so much more. 'A day without laughter is a day not lived' was his motto. Humorous, intelligent, always up for a practical joke: people who were around him laughed a lot.
Crime journalist Hendrik Jan Korterink first met Cor van Hout in 1986, and for the last time in August 2000. For this book, he spoke exclusively and extensively with Cor's family members (sister Laura and brother Ad, half-sister Nancy and half-brother Martin) and his many friends from the past and present. And with fellow kidnappers Frans Meijer and Martin Erkamps. Now that Cor is dead, he has not been forgotten. Without wanting to glorify his personality: Cor was a special person. It was never boring when he was around.
Much has been written about the Heineken kidnappers over the years. About the attacks on Cor van Hout. About Frans Meijer. About Willem Holleeder, who played the leading role in 'the trial of the century'; this book only deals with the kidnapping in passing. Almost everything has already been said and written about it. Except for one subject: the golden tip, which led to the previously unknown group of perpetrators, which means that the kidnapping can largely be considered a failure. The police have always been very secretive about that. But the actual course of events surrounding that golden tip was very different from what has been made public up to now.
Not only the 'beautiful sides' of Cor are described, but also his last years of life when he ended up in a downward spiral due to his alcohol addiction and became increasingly isolated. Cor van Hout was liquidated in broad daylight on 24 January 2003. It was 'a settling of scores in the criminal circuit.' Why? Korterink has indications that the motive comes from somewhere else than has been assumed up to now.
