Description:
Experiences with a new approach in nursing homes

We can do magic! Experiences with a new approach in nursing homes Every day, dozens of people move to nursing homes. These are dramatic moments for those involved. Some are confused, others have dementia or can no longer take care of themselves for physical reasons. From one day to the next, they find themselves living with people they didn’t choose and being cared for by people they couldn’t choose. They are also subjected to rules that don’t always brighten their already difficult final years. When can you shower? What time can you go to bed? What do you eat? And can you go outside when you feel like it? A number of nursing homes in the Netherlands decided a few years ago that things should and can be done differently. The focus should not be on the rules and the organization, not on risk-avoiding, but on the lives and well-being of individual people. 'Who is that resident and what does he want' is the guiding principle. Not: 'That's the way we've been doing it for years and that's the way it should be.' In 22 interviews by journalist Corine Koole (de Volkskrant, LINDA), residents, family members, caregivers, doctors, managers and administrators talk about their experiences with the new approach (From Rules to Relationships). 'We hope for a peat fire in nursing home care,' says Marie-Antoinette Bäckes, coordinator of radical innovation in nursing home care. Or as Topaz chairman of the board of directors Lia de Jongh says: 'This is about real life, no longer about life in “Reservaat Verpleeghuis”.' And resident Henk Anemaat finally no longer has trouble with his feet.
