Description:
A challenging, personal collection by an acclaimed poet.
A young woman leaves her parents and her Caribbean island behind to work as a nurse in the Netherlands. There she marries a Dutchman. The black woman and the white man have a daughter and a son. The daughter dies at a young age, the woman also does not grow old. Long after the death of the man, the son confronts the meager, inaccurate memories of what has been by crawling into the skin of the woman to see if, somewhere among the rubble, something can still be found of all that dead life. A hopeless mission. Or not?
who was i (penalty lines) is one long attempt to embody the personal past. How to write about anonymous lives that have disappeared forever, and that only mattered to you? And what can be said – about migration, racism, love, farewell – when you can hardly remember anything?
'This book is an event in poetry. A masterpiece.'***** NRC Handelsblad about Man Animal Thing
