Description:
'You give color to everything that Ceausescu made gray.'
Romania, late 1980s. Remus lives with his grandmother and works as a shoemaker. He dreams of being a great poet. But that is impossible in his Romania, a country that is bowing heavily under the communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. The encounter with Florica, a traditional Roma girl, turns both lives upside down. Florica yearns for freedom, far away from a forced marriage and the unwelcome advances of her uncle.
Thwarted by the secret service and Florica's family, they decide to flee to the free West. They end up in Italy, where life as an immigrant turns out to be less rosy than they thought. Despite all the opposition, they do everything they can to succeed. Florica goes to college and becomes a real Italian. Remus starts a Romanian restaurant. And just when life finally smiles at them, fate strikes.
'It remains exceptional in the national supply of debuts, such a writer who dares to tackle such uncomfortable, dark, grand stories... Above all, Popa is a vital storyteller who has to say something: a story that may be there.' - Jeroen Vullings, Vrij Nederland
