Description:
'Considering linguistic diligence' was once the subject of a speech during a meeting of the Society of Dutch Literature. The speech was a contribution to the debate on a normative or non-normative attitude towards linguistic changes. At that time, a strict attitude towards incorrect language use was still normal: nowadays, the lenient have the climate on their side and a taboo seems to have arisen on normatively judging the language use of the less educated or dialect speakers. August Hans den Boef regrets this development: he advocates an active, signalling attitude against barbarisms, ambiguities and snobberies. This collection contains a series of articles written from this attitude: about Bible translations, about the c- and n-word, diminutives, but also about shifts in meaning with regard to decency, respect and tolerance. Because Den Boef is not only concerned with language, but also with the effects of politics and religion on our language use. That is why he also advocates a revaluation of the concepts of cultural relativism and multiculturalism.
