Description:
What is the state of the Netherlands? According to some, we only need to look at the many initiatives of people among themselves - the neighbourhood initiatives, the bread funds, the sustainable energy cooperatives - to conclude that we are doing just fine. Citizens no longer wait for the government and can do a lot for each other: Things are going well! At the same time, in addition to this positive story, there is also another story about the Netherlands. There is widespread social discontent and the majority of Dutch people believe that things are going in the wrong direction in the Netherlands: Things are going badly! Two seemingly incompatible stories, which nevertheless have more in common than they seem at first glance. Both have to do with the same human needs: the need for social connection, for personal attention and human interaction, and for the feeling that people have influence and control over their own lives. More trust in people's own strength is part of this. But anyone who simply advocates 'letting citizens do more for themselves', in whatever way, draws the wrong lesson from the recent popularity of initiatives of people among themselves. It is about a fundamentally different organization of our society in which people are central again, and not the system. 'People are not policy instruments' Alexander Pechtold, General Political Considerations 2014
