Description:
'Perfect Men' tells the story of five men who each try to provide their lives with an appealing prelude.
Take former elephant keeper Wim Waterman. When he hears that the South African government is planning to shoot five thousand elephants, he explodes in a choleric rage that makes him a welcome guest on radio and TV. Full of gusto, the newly minted animal activist begins a hilarious tour of the media. But will he be able to convince even one of the audience that he is right? Or does he, like so many other 'experts', act as a means to kill time for the listless viewers?
The other main characters in 'Perfect Men' also try to give their lives an extra value, as the only effective means against the discouragement that slowly spreads over them like a cloud. What they are looking for is a path that leads to a perfect existence, without pitfalls and sorrow about the triviality that surrounds them.
But for now, Wim's friend Wally spends his days as a speechwriter for mindless politicians.
Tim is a former teacher, haunted by his dead parents and his brother Boris, who was run over by a car, as if they were collecting the rent on a house that has long since been demolished. Tim is looking for a replacement for his ideal of education, which has been lost to him due to an increasing lack of response.
And finally there is Neil, a successful violinist in the Great Vienna Orchestra, who continues to play doggedly before and after the death of his friend Boris, while as a personal intermission he compulsively fishes for the short-lived love of trumpeters and substandard tenors.
'Perfect Men' is a loving, sometimes bitter but at the same time uplifting and humorous novel about men whose lives become increasingly emotionally intertwined.
Other titles by Rudolf Geel at Azul Press: the novels 'The Eighth Deadly Sin', 'Blood Madonna' and 'The Women's Well', the novella 'Angel Game' and 'Twee', an unconditional love, reflections on his granddaughter.
