Description:
Gerard Wijkel is a TBS patient on long probation, which started early experimentally. He has a history of schizophrenia, but does everything he can to avoid relapsing into his old religious mania.
Eugénie Stauf is a controversial media magnate, just as determined as he is, but to free the world from God. She forces him - or so it seems - to a 'battle' on a live TV show, in which he must prove that God exists.
As Gerard's distance from reality grows, the question arises whether it is indeed true that Eugénie Stauf is trying to drive him crazy or whether Gerard is driving others crazy with that illusion. The whole story is heading towards a TV show that no broadcaster dares to broadcast... except Eugénie Stauf's!
REACTIONS TO 'DESCENDING OUT OF DARKNESS'
Henny Huisman: "Impressive struggle of the main character to keep his faith in God alive in a TV show that no broadcaster dares to broadcast. What a super exciting novel by Clemens van Brunschot!"
Peter ter Velde (journalist, author of 'The Father and the Son'): "Different realities are beautifully intertwined in this well-written story."
Maria Genova (journalist, author of 'Man is tough, woman is whore'): "A book that makes you think. Why does God exist for some people and not for others? Very original to answer this question by means of an exciting TV show."
Igor van Kaam (NLP Trainer, author of 'NLP Practitioners Training'): "Exciting, tragic and humorous."
Koert van der Velde (religious scholar, author of 'Flirting with God'): "Another great book that I read in one go."
Bert Stavenuiter (director of the Ypsilon association for relatives of people with increased vulnerability to psychosis): "Van Brunschot makes you feel how thin the dividing line between delusion and reality can be."
